TOUR

In this page you will find information on places and events that we consider worth of interest.
The striking morphological uniqueness of Argentario lies in the way it is linked to the mainland by two stripes of land called “Tomboli”: The northern Tombolo of Giannella and the southern Tombolo of Feniglia. Less than 400 years ago the Tombolo of Giannella was still not linked to the promontory, thus permitting the passage to the ships. This is testified by original prints, dating back the seventeenth century, that show the French-Piemontese vessels conquering the small town of Orbetello, now enclosed between two lagoons.

How can you spend your stay in Argentario?

From Porto S. Stefano it is possible to reach the Islands of Giglio and Giannutri. Half moon shaped, Giannutri is a very little island (resident population of 6 people) considered a jewel of the Mediterranean Sea for its wild beauty. The Island of Giglio is bigger and more populated with its two villages, Giglio Porto and Giglio Castello and its beautiful landscapes and beaches.

Both islands can be easily reached by ferries that in summer run regularly from Porto S. Stefano. There is also a private local shipping company that organizes short daily cruises to both islands (Porto S. Stefano, departure at 9.45 am, return at 7 pm). Lunch (fresh fish from the local fishing boats) is also served on board.

For those who like scuba diving, both in Porto S. Stefano and Porto Ercole there are several diving companies that provide professional assistance and organize scuba-cruises around Argentario and the Islands . The immersion beneath Punta dell’Avvoltore is well known among the scuba-divers. It is considered one of the ten best diving spots in Italy, where it is possible to see red coral and several fish species.

Argentario is the ideal place for those who, for their holidays, are looking for something special, with beautiful landscapes, mild climate, wild nature, history…
There are really many places to visit, each with its peculiarity. For bird watching, the Orbetello’s Lagoon Natural Oasis is the right place to admire, amongst other species, the Pink Flamingoes .
For those who simply like walking in the nature, there is the Maremma Natural Park, where it is also possible to enjoy horseback tours with the Butteri Maremmani.

Driving a few minutes inland from the coastline it is possible to reach lovely countryside little towns. Capalbio and Pitigliano still preserve the charm and features of ancient times (medieval and beyond). Good food and wine making are certainly one of the finest attractions of this land.
